Hard Drive Data Recovery
- DON'T PANIC! Data which is no longer accessible may well be recoverable.
- Check the obvious things. Is the power on? Is the monitor switched on? Have any cables come loose?
- Think first, act second. Recovering data requires two things: knowledge of what to do and knowledge of what NOT to do. Doing the wrong thing could result in the permanent loss of data which might otherwise have been recoverable.
- Assess the situation. What might have caused the problem? Are there any clues as to the source of the problem?
- Based on your assessment, draw up a plan. If the disk is making a grinding, scraping sound the heads may have come into contact with the media surface (a head crash). If so, power down immediately and do not reboot (the services of a professional data recovery services firm will most likely be required to recover the data). The following tips may help you to develop an appropriate strategy for a number of other common situations.
- If the problem is missing files or directories, rather than lack of access to an entire hard drive, check for accidental deletion. Files may be recoverable from a "Recycle Bin". Alternatively, the careful use of 3rd party utilities may assist in the recovery of data which has inadvertently been deleted.
- If you cannot boot from the drive and see the error message "Invalid Drive Specification" the problem may be with your CMOS (the area where information about your hard disk is stored). If this information has been lost you will need to re-enter it if possible, a process usually achieved by pressing a certain key when the machine is starting up in order to access the setup screen. Most systems will be able to detect the drive's specifications automatically although you may be required to enter them manually. A common reason for CMOS settings being lost is that the CMOS battery has run out of power and needs to be replaced. If your drive is a SCSI drive or a removable cartridge drive and you see the error message "Invalid Drive Specification" the problem may instead lie with a corrupted device driver or improperly configured CONFIG.SYS file.
- Don't format your drive or use FDISK.
- If the drive has been physically damaged by fire, water, impact trauma etc. seek the services of a professional data recovery services firm. Don't try to open up the drive yourself to investigate further.
- And last, but not least, if all else fails just use your backup. You did make a backup, didn't you?
