New Installs
Download LiveCD, Embedded, Developers Edition. If you are not sure which version is right for you, visit this primer wiki.
LiveCD
The pfSense CD is a live CD as well as the installer CD. You can assign interfaces and set a LAN IP at the console, and then log into the webGUI and perform further configuration there. Most everything should work in the live CD environment. To install to a hard drive in the machine to take full advantage of all features of pfSense run option 99 from the console menu.
Use the ISO to burn to CD as a CD image, not as a single big file on a data CD. See your CD recording software documentation for instructions on burning ISO files. Then boot the target machine off of the CD. If the machine does not support booting from CD, we have boot floppies available for download. The default username and password for a new pfSense installation is "admin" and the password is "pfsense".
If you plan on using a USB keychain or floppy, etc for LiveCD configuration storage be sure to format the media as MSDOS and insert it *BEFORE* booting the LiveCD. Afterwards an option will appear in the console menu that allows you to transfer the configuration over to the storage medium.
Upgrading from previous versions
Please download the stable installer and the latest update from updates and feed it to the Firmware tab. Please note, that there are different updates for the normal pfSense-version and the embedded images. NOTE: Updates for embedded images are not available. You must reflash. Finally if something doesn't work correctly, reinstall from scratch on the newest version before reporting problems.
