ETech, the O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference
March 26-29, 2007
Manchester Grand Hyatt, San Diego, CA

When you say "sufficiently advanced technology" to a technologist,
they'll invariably not need to be told the second half of the quote.
But it begs the question: how advanced is sufficiently advanced?
ETech 2007 will focus on magic and the sufficiently advanced
technology behind it. The Call for Participation is open for just ten
more days. We are inviting technologists and strategists, CTOs and
chief scientists, researchers, programmers, hackers, standards
workers, business developers, and entrepreneurs to lead conference
sessions and tutorials at ETech 2007. Proposals are due by October 9,
2006 and can be submitted online at
http://conferences.oreilly.com/etech.
Some magical effects are made by big technology, others by judicious
selection and integration of existing subtle technologies:
- The iPod can almost be seen as step backward in terms of the
technology behind its user-interface, yet is usable by everyone from
your kids to your grandparents.
- TiVo took a commodity Linux box, imbued it with a television
hook-up, recorder, and decent user-interface--yet is so much more
than the VCR.
- Google scored web pages by the words in them *and* by the number of
times those pages were linked to by other web pages, a simple idea
that lets the Web scale.
- BitTorrent's use of sufficiently advanced resource locators and
fragmented files together allows the entertainment industry see the
Internet as an opportunity, not a threat.
Are you creating magical effects? Then show us how. If your magic
makes complex things simple or makes the impossible possible, we want
to know about it. Whether the sufficiently advanced technology is
computer science, user interfaces, or cleverly routing around a
problem, we want to know about it. Show us how your passion makes the
impossible possible with bionic systems, data stores, swarming,
nanotechnology, energy, gaming, accessibility...the limits are your
imagination. More details are available on the ETech web site:

ETech taps into the creative spirit of all attendees, sparking
provocative encounters and productive inspiration that continue long
after the conference ends. Even if you're not one for speaking or
leading a tutorial, use this opportunity to suggest speakers, topics,
or technologies you think we should explore or wish you knew more
about. Send your ideas to
etech-idea@oreilly.com.
For the last two years, ETech has reached capacity. We're striving to
strike a balance between intimacy and finding a place for everyone
who wants to attend. However, we anticipate that we'll sell every
seat for ETech 2007 in advance, so if you'd like to participate, we
recommend that you sign up early. Registration will open in December
2006.
"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."
